Help Us Stop Whole Foods From Selling Rabbits!
We are trying to stop Whole Foods, a grocery food chain, from selling rabbit meat in their stores.
Many don’t know this, but rabbits are the 3rd most common household companion mammal, with over 6 million companion rabbits in the U.S alone.
Now Whole Foods wants to turn a companion animal into the latest food trend.
If Whole Foods is looking to cater to the demands and desires of the consumer, they need to take into account the demands and desires that rabbit homes bring Whole Foods, as well as the revenue rabbit households bring in annually.
Money is a HUGE motivator to Whole Foods. To quote John Mackey, Whole Foods Co-Founder & Co-CEO:
“Our first stakeholder is our customer and the most of them purchase and eat meat. As a mission driven company, it’s our job to offer high quality choices to our discerning customers to accommodate their food preferences. We are committed to prompting real change in the meat industry. And, as you point out, we are also working hard to help educate consumers about the importance of incorporating more whole plant foods–primarily vegetables, grains, beans and fruits– into their diets, which as a result means less meat consumption. As you know, we have many more vegan and vegetarian shoppers than conventional grocers, but the vast majority of our customers purchase animal foods. At the most, about 10 percent of our customers are strict vegetarians and probably around three percent are strict vegans. To not offer a full array of food options is basically suggesting that we voluntarily commit business suicide.
To give you perspective, Safer Way in Austin was a strictly vegetarian store and our sales were low. When we relocated the store, changed the name to Whole Foods Market and began selling meat, our popularity blossomed in the Austin community and our sales increased by 15 times.”

As you can see, Whole Foods is willing to compromise its company’s mission in order to boost its profits.
You can also see that even John Mackey is willing to continuously change his personal beliefs in the name of profit:
“Whole Foods was the first grocery chain to set standards for humane animal treatment. Mackey was influenced by animal rights activist, Lauren Ornelas, who criticized Whole Foods' animal standards regarding ducks at a shareholder meeting in 2003. Mackey gave Ornelas his email address and they corresponded on the issue. He studied issues related to factory farming and decided to switch to a primarily vegan diet that included only eggs from his own chickens. Since 2006, he has followed an entirely plant-based diet. He advocates tougher animal standards.”

Money is DEFINITELY not our motivation; compassion, environmental concerns, and doing the right thing are.
To us, we value the lives of other living creatures above all else, and we are not willing to compromise our beliefs.
But to others, there is much more at stake than the lives of these poor rabbits. There are also growing concerns over the overuse of land, water and fuel resources to produce animal products. There are numerous health issues associated with the consumption of meat.
Once we start on a trend of greed and selfish fulfillment, we begin to lose sight of the long term effects of our actions. We need to take a stance on doing what is right for the longevity of the planet and humans and non-human creatures alike.
